Another Oscar nominee from the year 2014. It is the movie that changed my mind about drummers. I mean, I’ve always liked drummers, but the order of preference used to be guitarist, vocalist, drummer, bassist. But after Whiplash, drummers shot straight to the top of my preference. The music in this movie is crazy good, it’s holding-my-breath-so-that-I-can-concentrate-better kind of good. I do like jazz music, but I’ve never heard jazz like this. Movies about music has never been this exciting, but then again it is a movie about drums, so in my mind it should be raw and wild. Talk about raw and wild, J.K. Simmons’s…
I have thought about writing this one on a Tuesday cos this is more a thank-you letter to Tiffany Reisz, the author of The Original Sinners series, than a decent book review. I read the first book of the series few years ago, and it wasn’t my favorite. As a matter of fact it was the weakest piece. That was the reason I didn’t continue straight ahead to book two.
The year 2015 was a poor year in the sense of reading. I hardly ever give up on books before finishing them but I gave up four books last year, just because I couldn’t concentrate properly. Of course, if you’ve been following my blog for a while, you would know that reading might not be the first thing on my mind. However I did get into the world of the Original Sinners with abundant. I began reading the second book…
Mr Tarantino (and The Hateful Eight) kept me out too late last night for me to do Jukebox Friday actually on a Friday. 😛 But good music sound as good on a Saturday too, so here it is. Now, one of my favorite song of all time, the song I nearly always sing at the karaoke (I am Asian after all, so I love karaoke). I do realize how I’m promoting stereotypes when I sing the Eye of the Tiger, but hey, I do it so well that I get standing ovations almost every time (at least by my friends 😀 )
But there is another reason for me to choose this masterpiece of a song, because Rocky. I looooove Sylvester Stallone. Back when Sly had those puppy eyes that still kills me standing, and till him being a handsome as hell older gentleman. I like my action stars rough…
“JOY is the wild true story of Joy Mangano and her Italian-American family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty by inventing the Miracle Mop and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Jennifer Lawrence stars, with Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, and Virginia Madsen. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, Joy defies genre to tell a story of family, loyalty, and love.” – IMDb
You would think that when one is single, one would have more time to watch movies and read. I seem to be having a writer’s block of some kind, but instead of for writing, it’s for reading. I hardly ever give up books in the middle. I even finished Fifty Shades of Grey, so you know how fucking dedicated I can be sometimes. But I’ve already abandoned three books in a row this summer. Don’t know why. Just couldn’t concentrate much, and once I notice I need to reread the same page for the seventh time, it’s a sign to give up. I did succeed in picking up a fantasy book lately. The main character is a sadistic 14-year-old prince, maybe that’s why I like it. 😀
And movies, haven’t watched anything good for a while now. But last week, I watched two review-worthy movie: Pixar’s new baby “Inside Out” and a small movie from 2012 called “If I Were You“. Let’s do Pixar first.
Whaaaa, me updating weekly?! Don’t get used to it though. 😀 But practically, I do update weekly, sometimes even multiple times a week, just not always to this blog. Let me pimp out my other blog again. I promise it’s kinky and fun. Click here.
But now, a very unique movie I watched a while back: Miss Meadows.
Oh. My. God. April 9th?? That was when I wrote my last entry? I’ll have you know how deeply ashamed of myself I am right now. But again, personal life. It’s really a long story in which I won’t dive into. If you’re interested in that story, I have an entirely new blog dedicated to my life take 2. Here’s the link.
I have been super busy these last few months, but not so busy that I didn’t have time for TV shows. I have picked up a few new shows, like Humans (robots that act like humans yay) and Mr Robot (humans that act like robots yay XD). Favorite shows ended like Nurse Jackie (that finale really sucked). Ongoing shows that had been a little disappointing. Yes, Game of Thrones, I am looking at you. You were chaotic this season. But then there was Sense8.
“Internationally bestselling author Philippa Gregory brings the tumult and intrigue of The Wars of the Roses to vivid life through the women of the House of Lancaster and the House of York, beginning with the story of Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen. A woman who won the love of a king and ascended to royalty by virtue of her beauty, Elizabeth fought tenaciously for the success of her family — her daughter who would one day unite the warring dynasties, and her two sons whose eventual fate has confounded historians for centuries: the Princes in the Tower. An active player in the power struggles that surrounded her, she made hard and courageous choices, always trying to protect those whom she loved. Informed by impeccable research and framed by her inimitable storytelling skills, Philippa Gregory gives an unforgettable voice to an extraordinary woman at the heart of a devastating conflict.”
When the first Fast and Furious came out, it was the year 2001 and I was still a teen. But I already loved car movies back then. I declared my love for them in my old entry “Do it Fast“. Fourteen years later, I’m still crazy in love with the Fast and Furious franchise. I don’t really give a flying fuck what people think about these, but for me they are all about fast and pretty cars, daring stunts and mind-blowing actions. In a deeper level, F&F is about family, loyalty and the will to fight for the things you love. This point forward, be warned for spoilers.
